Earlier and faster cancer detection is the goal of research underway here in Alberta. With funding from the Spark GrantsThe Metabolomics Innovation Centre (TMIC) based at the University of Alberta is leading the new effort.

With funding from the Spark GrantsThe Metabolomics Innovation Centre (TMIC) based at the University of Alberta is leading the new effort. Too often cancer is detected at a late stage but when lung cancers are treated early, survival rates increase significantly. TMIC co-director David Wishart’s team could transform lung cancer detection and save lives with a metabolomics-based blood test which would improve treatment outcomes enormously.

When things go wrong with our body, early warning signs include changes to the metabolites found in blood and urine. Match those early metabolomic changes with the disease, and clinicians will gain an important diagnostic advantage.

Genome Alberta has been supporting the work of David Wishart and TMIC for years because of the promise of metabolomics and we are pleased to see organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society, CIHR, and Brain Canada provide new funding for this important field of study. Freelance broadcaster Don Hill talked with David Wishart about the role of metabolomics in detecting disease and his latest work to put it to use in early cancer detection.
